Transformers for NCR high-rises, data centres and malls
Published 4 November 2026 by Jaybee Industries
A Gurugram office tower, a Greater Noida data hall and a Noida mall all buy transformers differently from a factory does. Load density is higher, space costs more, and a fault affects thousands of people. These are the decisions that most shape the specification.
1. Where will the substation sit?
For buildings with basement or service-floor substations, the indoor location usually decides the technology. A cast resin or VPI dry-type unit avoids having oil inside an occupied building. If you have a ground-level corner of the plot, a compact substation keeps HV equipment outside the building altogether.
2. How much redundancy?
Offices and malls often use two or more transformers sharing the load, sized so the remaining units can carry the essential load if one is out. Data centres go further, with separate paths. Decide the philosophy (N, N+1, 2N) before sizing, because it changes the rating of every unit.
3. Size for the real load profile
A data hall runs at a steady, high load around the clock. A mall peaks in the evening and at weekends. An office peaks on weekday afternoons. A transformer that runs near full load continuously deserves a close look at load losses. One that runs lightly for long periods deserves a close look at no-load losses. The IS 1180 efficiency levels help compare offers.
4. Plan the HV intake
Large campuses may take supply at a higher voltage and step it down through a power transformer, which Jaybee builds up to 25 MVA and 66 kV. Fix the incoming voltage, the fault level and the cooling (ONAN/ONAF) with the utility and consultant early. See power transformer cooling.
5. Check delivery logistics
NCR sites often have restricted truck entry times, ramps into basements and limited crane space. Give the supplier the access route, ramp slope and clear opening sizes, so the unit and its packing are designed to get in.
6. Agree testing and maintenance up front
Specify routine tests and any type tests the consultant needs, and whether you want to witness them. For after-sales support, Jaybee's AMC options include a standby transformer within 24 hours of a reported fault. Our annual maintenance checklist is a good starting point for facility teams.
